Internet security

The Commission has warned that divergent national regulation to protect security on the Internet could impede the internal market as Member States begin to regulate cryptographic technologies, such as digital signatures and encryption products. These are increasingly used to protect the confidentiality of information on open networks. Accordingly, the Commission has recently published a policy paper proposing the harmonisation of national standards to facilitate the development of a European market and industry for cryptographic products and services.
