Telecommunications: Communication on Internet Governance adopted

United Kingdom

The European Commission has adopted a Communication on Internet Governance (the management of Internet names and addresses etc.). The Communication welcomes the fact that the United States of America's White Paper on this issue has accepted the most important concerns and criticisms voiced in the European Union's (EU) reply to a US Green Paper published in February 1998. The United States, the EU and the international community now agree that all pending decisions on Internet Governance should be referred to the new private-sector self-regulatory Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) which will be created over the next few months. The Communication proposes a number of actions in order to assure the involvement of the private sector organisations concerned and of those responsible for the development of the use of the Internet in the Member States and in the EU Institutions.
