Employment - parental leave

United Kingdom

On 4th November, The Government announced the final legislation to implement the parental leave provisions of the Employment Relations Act 1999.These will come into force on 15/12/99 as previously announced.

There are 2 changes to the original plans. Firstly, parents of disabled children will be able to use their entitlement over the first 18 years of the child's life rather than just the first 5 years. A disabled child for this purpose is one for whom a disability living allowance is awarded.

Secondly, the fallback scheme for taking parental leave now provides for a maximum of 4 weeks parental leave per parent, per child, per year.

Although promised, the new regulations were not available on the DTI or Stationery Office websites this morning.
