Pre-budget report - environmental issues

United Kingdom

Gordon Brown has conceded to intense industry pressure over the proposed climate change levy (widely know as the energy tax) by announcing the scaling down of the tax in his pre-budget report yesterday. Bringing relief to the most energy-intensive industries such as steel, aluminium and cement, the proposed annual revenue from the tax is to be reduced from GBP1.7 billion to GBP1 billion. By pressing ahead with the levy the Chancellor has also pleased environmentalists, maintaining his growing reputation as the Green Chancellor.

Other environmental issues:

The money available for energy-efficiency schemes is to be trebled from GBP50 million to GBP150 million.

The fuel duty escalator, which automatically increases petrol tax by 6% over inflation, has been cancelled, with fuel duties to be decided Budget by Budget.
