UK: Consumer products

United Kingdom

The DETR has published the responses to its October 1998 consultation paper, “Consumer Products and the Environment”. The paper invited views on how policy on consumer products and the environment could best be developed and on some specific proposals and options. A total of 94 submissions were received, 19 from businesses, 15 from consumers, 20 from environmental groups, 12 from local authorities and 28 from trade associations. The general priorities common to most responses were that tackling the environmental impacts associated with goods and services should be a high priority in achieving sustainable development. 95% of respondents supported the Government’s intention to play an active role in pursuing these aims at European level, insuring the competitiveness of British industry. A large number of respondents emphasised that only a regulatory framework would ensure a level playing field.
