UK: Contaminated land

United Kingdom

The British Standard Code of Practice, “Investigation of Potentially Contaminated Sites” has been prepared, superseding DD175:1988 which has been withdrawn. The Code of Practice provides guidance on the investigation of potentially contaminated land or land with naturally high concentrations of potentially harmful materials for the purpose of obtaining data to determine or manage the ensuing risks. It recommends a minimum level of acceptable practice for investigation design, field sampling, sample handling and analysis of samples from such sites. It should be noted that compliance with a British Standard does not in itself confer immunity from legal obligations.
