UK: Green ministers

United Kingdom

The first annual report of Green Ministers has been published. The Green Ministers Committee has held responsibility for the Greening Government Initiative which aims to promote the integration of the three strands of sustainable development (economic, environmental and social) across Government and the wider public sector. Green Ministers also aim to promote the use of environmental appraisals as an integral part of the policy making process in each Department. This first report covers progress across Government and describes a wide range of activity: reducing energy, transport, waste and water, implementation of environmental management systems, training and promoting sustainable development. Green action reported includes a cut in central Government energy consumption by over 18% since 1990, a combined heat and power scheme serving 23 Whitehall Departments and Downing Street and progress towards achieving ISO 14001 accreditation, achieved by 5 Departments this year.
