Rating appeals goes on-line

United Kingdom

The most recent non-domestic rating list came into effect on 1st April 2000. For the first time the rating list is available for inspection not only from the relevant billing authority, but also by visiting the Valuation Office Agency's website (http://www.voa.gov.uk). By typing in the post code of the rateable premises, the rateable value under both the Year 2000 rating list and the now historic 1995 rating list can be accessed instantaneously.

In addition, the Valuation Office Agency has designed a simple process whereby ratepayers, having located the rateable value of the relevant property in the agency's website, will be able to call up an appeal form, complete it and e-mail it directly on to their local valuation officer.

Proposals are afoot to improve this system further by extending the service to multiple appeals and also to provide for appeals to be automatically registered into a central database and processed once they have been e-mailed to the Valuation Office Agency.

These moves are part of the Government's general move towards modernisation of the non-domestic rating system.
