The Data Protection Act 1998 - End of first transitional period

United Kingdom

The first and most important transitional period for the Data Protection Act 1998 ends on 23 October 2001. This means that many of the exemptions which currently apply to trustees of occupational pension schemes will no longer apply.

From 24 October 2001 trustees must be fully compliant with the Act including:

  • having a notification or registration with the Information Commissioner as Data Controllers;
  • having in place data protection agreements with any third parties who process information on behalf of the trustees

If you require advice or assistance on the Data Protection Act 1998 please speak to your normal contact in the pensions team or Nigel Moore, [email protected] or telephone +44(0)20 7367 3405.
