Declaring money when arriving in Russia

Russia

According to the Order of the State Customs Committee, registered on 18 December, all travellers carrying more than $1,500 are required, upon arrival in Russia, to declare (in writing) all amounts of foreign currency. This declaration will be stamped at the point of entry and then has to be shown to the authorities on the way out of the country if any foreign currency is being taken back home.

In a positive move, the Order emphasises that there is no limit on the amount of foreign currency allowed to be brought into the country and travellers will not have to explain where they got the money from or how they intend to spend it.

The State Customs Committee has not yet enacted regulations on penalties or fines for undeclared imports despite the fact that the new Order will come into force on 17 January 2002.
