Regulations on fast visas in Russia

Russia

The head of the Government's Tourism Department announced on 18 December new regulations concerning visas for Russia. According to reports on the new regulations, from 1 February 2002, applicants will be able to order a tourist visa through certain tourist agencies (where there will be is still to be defined) three days in advance and collect them upon arrival in Russia.

The shortest "long - weekend" visa will cost $35 and can –as with all other tourist visas- be received from six entry points: Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport Terminal 2, St. Petersburg’s international airport, Bagrationovskoye and Mamonovo on the Polish border and Brusnichnaya and Torfyanovka on the Finnish border.

The fast track visas were introduced last year, when the authorities in Moscow and St.Petersburg finally decided that tourism was a valuable source of income. Unfortunately, the decision to implement the fast-track visas which was scheduled for last summer, was never implemented.

Citizens of the following countries are entitled to a fast-track visa: Schengen Agreement countries; the U.K.; Switzerland; and, Japan. The number of qualifying countries has been limited for one year to test the validity of the scheme. Should all go well, more countries and more entry points will be included and the experiment will be extended.
