Annual increase to tribunal awards announced

United Kingdom

The Annual increases for Tribunal awards have now been announced. These take effect from 1st February 2003.

The key changes are:

1. The maximum amount of a "week's pay" for the purpose of calculating certain awards such as the basic award or statutory redundancy payments is increased from £250 to £260.

2. The maximum compensatory award is increased from £52,600 to £53,500.

3. The minimum basic award for certain automatically unfair dismissals (such as trade union and health and safety related dismissals) is increased from £3,400 to £3,500.

4. The limit on the amount of guarantee payment payable to an employee in respect of any day increases from £17 to £17.30.

The new amounts are effective where the "appropriate" date falls on or after 1st February 2003. For the purposes of unfair dismissal basic and compensatory awards the appropriate date is the effective date of termination. Therefore terminations on or after 1st February will be subject to the new amounts.
