The Government stated in Budget 2004 it is considering the introduction of property investments funds (PIFs), better known as real estate investment trusts, or REITs, in the US, in order to improve the efficiency and liquidity of the UK investment property market and improve access to real estate as an asset class for long term savings and expanding the private rented sector. Statements in the Consultation document they issued appeared to exclude both owner-operators as well as hotel real estate investors whose returns are linked to the turnover or the performance of the hotel operations.
