Health and safety calendar – October 2005

United Kingdom

The health and safety calendar highlights key dates for proposed and existing legislation and policy and closing dates for consultation papers relating to major health and safety issues in the UK and EU.

It will provide a useful tool for health and safety managers tracking new legislation to control risks and improve performance through a health and safety management system such as OHSAS 18001.

Key developments this month include:

  • Directive on the minimum health and safety requirements regarding the exposure of workers to the risks arising from physical agents (optical radiation): the final adoption is expected in the fourth quarter of 2005.
  • Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) (Amendment) Regulations: the Regulations will partly come into force on 1 October 2005.
  • Informal Consultation on the management of railway contractors: the closing date for responses is 7 October 2005.
