Health & Safety calendar - May 2006

United Kingdom

The health and safety calendar highlights key dates for proposed and existing legislation and policy and closing dates for consultation papers relating to major health and safety issues in the UK and EU.

It will provide a useful tool for health and safety managers tracking new legislation to control risks and improve performance through a health and safety management system such as OHSAS 18001.

Latest developments include:

  • 31 May is the closing date for responses to the HSE Consultation on the draft revised Safety Assessment Principles (SAPs) for the regulation of the nuclear industry and assessment of nuclear site licence conditions.
  • While the HSE is finalising its draft simplification plan that includes proposals to simplify legislation starting with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations, now forecast for 1 October 2006, Europe has similarly aimed at simplification and will be closing its stakeholder consultation on the revision of the Construction Products Directive (CPD) 89/106/EECCPD on 31 May. The aim of the revised CPD is to make it simpler, more effective and transparent, and to reduce the costs of implementation. It is hoped that the focus will be on better regulation and implementation as opposed to simplification in name only that may not work in practice.
