Slovakia: new product price labelling regulations

Slovakia

On 1 September, 2007, new product price labelling regulations came into force.

Key changes include:

  • a tighter definition of sale price to mean the final price inclusive of VAT and other taxes per unit or given amount
  • a tighter definition of unit price to mean the final price inclusive of VAT and other taxes per kilogram, litre, m2 or m3 of a product or other unit usually and commonly used to sell a specific product
  • an obligation on the seller to label each product with its sale price and unit price so that they are clearly distinguishable and easily legible
  • no requirement to show the unit price separately where it is identical to the sale price
  • no requirement to show the sale price and unit price on artwork and antiquities, products sold at auction and products offered as part of a service
  • no requirement to indicate the unit price on:
    • products with nominal weight below 50g or nominal volume below 50ml
    • miscellaneous products sold in one package for a single price
    • products which are impossible to divide into parts without altering their quality or characteristics, and which are not subject to the obligation to indicate their length, weight, volume or surface or which are usually not provided with data on length, weight, volume or surface
    • sales of concentrates and foodstuffs used to prepare ready-made meals or partially ready-made meals by adding liquid
  • no requirement to show the sale price on products sold by quantity
  • an allowance for packaged goods required by special regulations to state the net weight and net weight after drying to show only the unit price for the net weight after drying
  • a requirement for adverts (including on leaflets, billboards etc) which quote a sale price to show the unit price as well
  • a requirement for products which are sold with a bonus for the consumer to show the unit price calculated without the consumer bonus
  • a requirement for products to show the unit price when they are sold at a discount due to their imminent expiry date (in which case it can be based on the discounted price)

Law: decree no. 387/2007 Coll. of the Slovak Government providing for product price labelling, cancelling Ministry of Economy regulation no. 545/2002 Coll.
