Bulgaria

Bulgaria’s power sector continues to grow steadily, according to the 2008 energy bulletin published by the Ministry of Economy and Energy.


Key statistics for 2008 in the report include:

  • coal production of 28.8 million tons (1.4% more than in 2007) 90.6% of which is lignite coal and 9.3% brown coal. 97.1% of coal is used for electric and heat power generation
  • natural gas production of 218 million m3, with 3,487 million m3 imported from Russia, the only external supplier
  • 7.2 million tonnes of crude oil imports in 2008 (1.4% more than in 2007), with insiginificant amounts of oil produced in Bulgaria
  • gross electricity generation of 45 TWh, 5.4 TWh (11.9%) of which was exported. Of this, 43.6% is from coal-fired heat and power plants, 35% from nuclear plants and 6.4% from renewable energy sources (including 122.2 GWh from wind generators, up 161.1% on 2007). End consumption of electricity was 29.2 TWh (1.9% more than in 2007).
  • heat production of 18,133 GWh (0.6% more than in 2007), 97.8% of which was from combined heat and power plants
