Slovakia: reduced support for renewable energy producers

Slovakia

From 1 July 2013, reduced State support will be available for producers of electricity from renewable sources, biomethane and high-efficiency combined heat and power.

The changes are intended to optimise the cost of supporting the electricity tariffs on offer.

Solar power plants will be particularly affected, as support will only be available for facilities with overall installed capacity of 30 kW (instead of 100 kW, as currently).

Several experts from the energy sector, including the Slovak Association of Photovoltaic Industry, expect a huge reduction in the use of solar energy in Slovakia. Construction of new solar power plants that were expected to be built in 2013 is expected to grind to a halt.

Following the changes, support will only be available to facilities that were built and put into operation under the Slovak Energy Act, Building Act or other specific regulations.

Energy producers receiving support will be monitored throughout the 15-year period over which it is available and will immediately lose the right to further support if they are fined for a second time for certain offences or omissions.
