Call for evidence: Listed events - Implementing the Media Act 2024

United Kingdom

Ofcom has opened a call for evidence to the public requesting inputs on how to carry out certain changes to the UK’s Listed Events Regime which were proposed in the Media Act (the “Act”). The Act, which received Royal Assent in May 2024, set out some key changes to the Listed Events Regime, which governs the coverage that listed events (sporting or other events of “national interest”) receive in the UK.

As part of these changes, Ofcom has been given powers under the Act to define certain terms in secondary legislation (such as “live coverage”, “adequate live coverage” and “adequate alternative coverage”) and also revise the existing Listed Events Regime Code. The Act did not grant Ofcom new powers to determine which sporting events and other events are listed in the Regime, which remains within the remit of the Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport.

Ofcom has asked for stakeholder input on how to carry out these powers, by asking the following questions in their call for evidence:

  • What matters should Ofcom take into account in defining “live’ coverage”?
  • What factors should Ofcom take into account in defining “adequate live coverage”?
  • What factors should Ofcom take into account in defining “adequate alternative coverage” for Group B events?
  • What matters should Ofcom consider when revising the listed events Code?

Ofcom has asked for responses to be received by the 26th September 2024, using their Response Form, to be sent to [email protected]. It plans to consult on proposals in 2025, with the new regime expected to take effect in 2026.
