OFWAT's final price determinations

United Kingdom

The Director General of Water Services, Ian Byatt, has announced his final price determinations for water companies for the next 5 years. This marks the end of the Periodic Review, although companies will have until 25 January 2000 to request a referral to the Competition Commission to have their price limits re-examined.

Customers will benefit from an average 12% reduction in their bills from April and a GBP15 billion investment programme in environmental improvements over the next 5 years. Efficiency savings in recent years has led to the decision to cut prices.

The investment programme will ensure significant improvements in sewage discharge treatment to improve river quality and protect bathing and shellfish waters. Of the GBP15 billion, GBP6.4 billion will be spent on capital investment to maintain the industry's infrastructure and improve customer service, GBP7.4 billion will be spent on improvement programmes to ensure higher water quality standards and GBP1.7 billion will be spent on water supply improvements to limit over-abstraction.
