UK: Aggregates

United Kingdom

A report published by the DETR identifies and values the environmental costs associated with the supply of aggregates. “The Environmental Costs and Benefits of the Supply of Aggregates, Phase II” follows interim findings further to research commissioned by the DETR beginning in August 1998 which were published in March 1999. Additional research included in the final report has confirmed that significant adverse environmental impacts are generated by the extraction of aggregates, including noise, dust, visual intrusion and loss of amenities. The cost of quarrying in national parks is calculated as £11 per tonne, significantly higher than the £6 per tonne reported in March. The Government will be using the research in its policy decisions on a possible aggregates tax.
