UK: Highways works and trees

United Kingdom

A survey of London tree officers showed that most damage to street trees resulted from local authorities’ own works on highways, damage being caused by road resurfacing, kerb repair work or gritting salt being used too close to trees. The DETR has therefore issued draft guidance to both highway engineers and tree officers on how to work together to minimise actual and potential damage to trees. Good practice measures are provided in the guidance which are consistent with those given in the National Joint Utilities group guidance advising utilities companies on how to undertake work and reinstate road surfaces with minimal damage to trees, published in 1995.
