The PRC Water Law amended

The Standing Committee of the National People's Congress recently approved the amendment to the PRC Water Law that has been in place since 1988.

The amended Water Law has eight chapters, covering such areas as plans for water resources, development and exploitation of water resources, protection of water resources, surrounding environment and hydraulic projects, water allocation, dispute resolution for water affairs as well as legal liabilities for breach of the law.

The amendment presents a number of features. These include:

  • strengthening the centralised administration on water resources;

  • highlighting the importance of saving water and protecting water resources;

  • more clear-cut administration and planning on development, exploitation and protection of water resources; and

  • reinforcing the legal liabilities arising from any breach of the law.

The amended law will become effective on 1st October 2002.
