Consumer law/free movement of goods: Proposal to extend product liability

United Kingdom

Proposal to extend product liability

Keen to allay public fears about the safety of agricultural produce, particularly following the BSE crisis, the Commission wants consumers to be compensated defective agricultural products such as meat, cereals, fruit and vegetables. It has therefore proposed extending the 1985 Product Liability Directive, which introduced a general system of strict liability (i.e. without fault) for defective products, to agricultural products.
