The cause of the problem was sewage passing along the river, reducing oxygen levels, which had emanated from the Wessex Water sewage works at Trowbridge. Over 5,000 fish were killed and Wessex Water were fined £15,000 for causing polluting matter to enter the river contrary to Section 85(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. (ENDS Report 279, p49)
