The Air Navigation (Environmental Standards) Order 2002 (SI 2002 No 798) prescribes new noise certification standards for helicopters and for microlight aeroplanes. The regulations, which came into force in April 2002, revoke and replace a number of earlier air navigation orders. The Regulations also prescribe new standards for pollution emissions (see Section 2 Air Pollution).

A Directive establishing rules and procedures for the introduction of noise-related operating restrictions at Airports has been published in the Official Journal (2002/30/EC). This allows EU countries to restrict, and if necessary withdraw, access for the noisiest aircraft at certain times of day or under certain conditions on an airport-by-airport basis in order to minimise noise pollution. The Directive was possible after an agreement was finally reached by member countries of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in October 2001 on the contentious rights of individual countries or regions to impose restrictions on aircraft access. Previously, imposing operating restrictions on aircraft on noise pollution grounds would have been in contravention of ICAO rules.
